How to Measure for Patio Furniture Covers

A furniture cover should fit the actual object, not the category name on the box. Measure the widest and tallest points, account for unusual shapes, and then compare those numbers with the cover maker’s own fitting instructions.

Use the furniture’s assembled shape

Place cushions and adjustable parts in the position the manufacturer expects during storage. Close extensions and lower adjustable backs only when the furniture instructions allow it. Do not measure from an online listing unless you have confirmed that it describes your exact model.

Take three core measurements

  1. Width: measure left to right across the widest fixed points.
  2. Depth: measure front to back at the deepest point, including projecting arms or handles.
  3. Height: measure from the supporting surface to the highest point that will remain under the cover.

For round tables, record the diameter and height. For an L-shaped sectional, sketch each run and note the overall outside dimensions. For stacked chairs, measure the complete stack after confirming that stacking is permitted.

Match the maker’s fit guidance

Cover brands do not all use the same allowance. Some specify a close fit; others require extra room for installation and airflow. Follow the selected cover’s size chart instead of adding a universal number. Avoid a cover that drags on the ground, where it can collect dirt or water, and avoid stretching fabric over sharp edges.

Plan for water and ventilation

A cover cannot correct furniture placed in standing water. Keep drains clear, use any supplied vents or supports as directed, and inspect after storms. Trapped moisture can encourage staining or biological growth. Clean and dry both furniture and cover according to their care labels before long storage.

Measurement checklist

  • Exact furniture model confirmed
  • Width, depth, and height recorded at widest points
  • Irregular shape sketched
  • Manufacturer size chart checked
  • Tie-down or buckle locations accessible
  • Drainage and ventilation plan reviewed

If the patio itself is crowded, start with the small-patio size and layout guide. Never use a cover near a hot appliance, open flame, or other condition prohibited by either manufacturer.

Sources and limits

The exact product manual and cover maker’s current size chart are controlling sources. Weather varies by location; monitor local forecasts through the National Weather Service.
